The Libertine

listening to julio iglesias' 'Crazy'...

All the debauchery and madness in 'The Libertine'.
I love dark movies featuring broody men.
Johnny Depp and Tony Leung are the best candidates for such roles.

In the movie, Depp stars as John Wilmont ('Johnny'), the decadent second Earl of Rochester who writes bawdy plays and indulges in alcohol. Too smart, too different from the rest, the Earl is a tortured soul. Since he's unable to get satisfaction from life, he covers it up with his caustic tongue and wicked humour. Only on stage is Johnny able to find passion and direction. And it is at the playhouse that Johnny meets the woman he unfortunately falls in love with.

His outrageous behaviour amuses his peers and gets him banished by the king from time to time. Love hate relationship between the monarch and his subject. Then one day, his boldness finally gets the better of him and leads to the Earl's eventual downfall. However, he manages to give a magnificent last act before he breathes his last.

I could identify with Depp's character because sometimes, it's easier to play the jester than face your own true self.

As usual, after watching films with underlying messages, we tend to think a little more than we normally do. Or maybe it's just a farce to pretend that we are thinking creatures. So after 'Libertine', we went for dinner and friend tried to psychoanalyze me.

"Do you know that you've been putting the same two pieces of vegetables on your spoon with the noodles, then removing the vege before eating the noodles?"

"Was I?"

"Yes. You're doing it unconsciously. And repeatedly for each bite. It probably says something about you."

"Oh really?"

"Maybe it's how you subconsciously behave in a relationship. You're afraid to give. You give some, but later you take it away."

"There could be a simpler explanation."

"What?"

"That I don't quite fancy this bowl of kimchi noodles?"

He rolled his eyes. Nevertheless, I became so careful after he told me about my eating pattern that I couldn't concentrate on the food. Dammit!
